The Biden administration has implemented new rules requiring airlines to automatically refund passengers for canceled or significantly delayed flights and to disclose upfront baggage, change, or cancellation fees.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the importance of providing passengers with clear information and timely refunds.
The rules mandate that airlines must offer full, automatic refunds for flights canceled or delayed by more than three hours domestically and six hours internationally, as well as for other significant changes to flights.
This crackdown on airlines' "junk fees" is part of a broader effort by the Biden administration to promote transparency and consumer protection.
The administration aims to save passengers over half a billion dollars annually by holding airlines accountable for fee transparency.
