"On this day in music history: October 4, 1980 - "Funkin' For Jamaica
(N.Y.)" by Tom Browne hits #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart for
4 weeks, also peaking at #9 on the Club Play chart. Written by Tom
Browne and Toni Smith, it is the biggest hit for the former commercial
pilot turned jazz trumpeter. Browne will come up with the initial idea
for the song at his parents home, later collaborating with singer Toni
Smith (not Chaka Khan, as she has been often mistaken to be on this
song) will write the lyrics for the song. The track features co-producer
Dave Grusin ( piano), Marcus Miller (bass), Bobby Broom (guitar),
Bernard Wright (synthesizers), Buddy Williams (drums) and Earl "Crusher"
Bennett (percussion). In spite of the records' huge R&B chart
success, it will not make the Hot 100 chart. Over the years, "Funkin'
For Jamaica" will be sampled widely in Hip Hop and the song's hooks
interpolated into many R&B records, cementing its status as a
Funk/R&B classic."

- "Diamonds And Pearls", the 13th album by Prince is released. Produced by Prince, it is recorded at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, MN, Olympic Studios in London, Warner Pioneer Studios in Tokyo, Japan, and Larrabee Sound Studios in Los Angeles, CA from Early 1989 - Mid 1991. It is the first album to feature his new band The New Power Generation which includes singer and keyboardist Rosie Gaines, drummer Michael Bland, and keyboardist Tommy Barbarella. The track "Live 4 Love" is the first recorded for the album circa 1989, with the bulk of the songs being written and recorded in 1990 - 91. The album will spin off six singles including "Gett Off" (#6 R&B, #21 Pop),
"Insatiable" (#3 R&B) and the chart topping "Cream". Initial copies

Produced by Maurice White and Charles Stepney, it is recorded at Wally Heider Studio 3 in Los Angeles, CA, Burbank Studios in Burbank, CA, Hollywood Sound Recorders and Westlake Audio in Hollywood, CA from April - May 1976 Issued after the breakthrough successes of “That’s The Way Of The World” and the live “Gratitude” albums, it is another artistic and commercial triumph for the band. But it will also mark the loss of longtime co-producer, arranger and mentor Charles Stepney who will pass away during the recording of the album.
